We went shopping for school clothes with my brothers at JC Penny downtown Battle Creek where I got my first bell bottom bluejeans, and Kenny's for sadle shoes. I remember the great times we went to Richland roller rink he would hold my hand and we could go fast, very fast he held me up so much fun! The first mini bike he put together and taught me to ride and the safety helmet he made me wear that I hated! This man even broke my brothers horse and taught me how to ride mine which was great. The snowmobiles and dunebuggies as a teenager and riding his motorcycle with him to school by then we had cool helmets (I got to pick them out)! I also got to learn to cook and he taught me about paying the bills before we did other things, sitting at the kitchen table. He was a single father for most of my teen years. He worked 12 hour shifts 7 days a week at times for Clark Equipment, He was a Scout Leader for my brothers and used to walk me to Campfire girls! Some of his greatest acheivements were in his golden years, helping his neighbors, mowing their lawns picking up debrie after a storm, snowblowing driveways getting up at 6am to help watch the little kids get on the bus at the bus stop. He was known for his long walks through Urbandale. He visited shut ins and took people to cancer therapy treatments. HE GAVE OF HIMSELF! Unselfishly for free! He knew his neighbors and he interacted with them something that doesn't happen any more! I watched him teach my youngest children to ride a bike and tie shoes, as well as answer the "why" questions of a 2 years old and laugh! I also remember he didn't cry much but when his good friend Gene Vanderlip was laid to rest I held his hand and watched the tears trickle down his cheeks! He was human one of the BEST! I will miss him greatly LOVE YOU DADDY!
