Obituary for Doris Evelyn Rogers (Underwood)

Doris Evelyn Rogers (Underwood)
It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Doris Evelyn (Underwood-Kitt) Rogers age 84, announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, neighbor and friend on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. She recently had been a resident at Evergreen Nursing and Rehab Center in Springfield, MI.

She was born September 6, 1932 in Dayton, TN (Rhea County) the daughter of Alanzo Underwood and Flossie Mae (Yates) Underwood.
In Tennessee, Doris had worked in an underwear factory. Among her many jobs, she had owned and operated the Rogers Sewing Center in Urbandale and had worked at Kellogg’s cereal plant for many years. She worked in housekeeping and as a funeral attendant with Bachman Hebble Funeral Service from Oct. 1994 until medical issues allowed her to retire in December 2008.

She is survived by daughter: A. “Karen” & Gary Dean of Battle Creek, MI; granddaughter: Ashley B. Lusk of Battle Creek, MI; grandson: Darrin J. Lusk of Battle Creek, MI; two great grandchildren: Alaya E. Lusk and Rogan A. Lusk both of Battle Creek, MI; three step-grandchildren: Leah Campbell of Battle Creek; Gary & Charissa Dean, II of Kalamazoo; Tracie & Dean Zoll of Madison, WI; and many other step great grandchildren.
Down South as a child her Dad grew watermelons and would have all the children go into the field to select their own to eat. After retirement Doris enjoyed tending to a tomato & green bean garden, flower gardening, loved sewing, being with her family, she loved going to baseball games with her brother Crawford watching the Battle Cats and the Stan Musial World Series games at CO Brown stadium, playing cards with brothers & sisters, having friends & family over for dinners & visits. Several times she & Cleon went to South Padre Island, TX and to Florida for a few months during the winter. She did a lot of canning and freezing produce from the garden and she was known to make the “best pies” sometimes making 4 or 5 at a time.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband: Jack M. Kitt in 1963 and her second husband: Cleon E. Rogers on June 22, 2003; her son: Charles R. Kitt on July 10, 1992; four brothers: Allen "Toby" Underwood on Sept 5, 1992, Harlon Underwood on Feb. 13, 2003, Seabron Underwood on May 11, 1998; James “Crawford” Underwood on January 5, 2017; three sisters: Elsie A. Green on Nov. 7, 1999; Minnie Nelson on March 21, 1995;Christina Ober; five half-brothers: Eugene Underwood, Luther Underwood, Sherman Underwood, Walton Underwood, Winford Underwood; three half-sisters: Kate Perkinson, Lucille Rynes, and Zetta Wonley.

She was full of energy and lived each day to the fullest. She always seemed to be working from early morning till night. She came from a very large family of 16 siblings. She and Cleon had a large vegetable garden which her family maintained during the spring and summer; and she shared her crops with others at work and at church. As a family they took vacations the first two weeks of August each year and went to the Upper Peninsula camping, where her husband made blueberry pancakes and his famous Hobo Stew. Doris was a charter member of Redemption Lutheran Church where she and Cleon were youth counselors for Walther League and an Altar Guild member.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 19, 2017 at the Bachman Hebble 4:00 PM until 7 PM. Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 10:00 in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Gorlitz of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church officiating.
