Obituary for Edward Douglas Fletcher

Edward Douglas Fletcher
Edward D. Fletcher, age 83, of Battle Creek, MI died Wednesday March 22, 2017 at home with his wife of 50 years by his side. Edward was born January 28, 1934 in Grand Rapids, MI to Fleming D. and Elizabeth M. (Ritter) Fletcher and came to Battle Creek as a child. Edward was a 1952 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and served in the Air National Guard from 1952-1960. Edward married the former Nancy L. Thompson on September 7, 1966. He had been employed by the US Postal Service from 1960 to 1990 beginning his career as a letter carrier and retiring as Postmaster of Richland, MI. Edward had also managed the Auto and WestPoint Drive In theatres as well as assisting with the Bijou and Michigan Theatres in downtown Battle Creek. During his retirement he was also seasonally employed at RWG of Battle Creek. Edward was a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church, and had served on many of the committees and boards. He also served as a church youth group leader and softball coach. Edward was a lay leader of the Methodist Church and served in that capacity for several years. He had served on the Battle Creek City Development Advisory Committee and was proud to be involved in his city. In later years Edward enjoyed building Adirondack furniture, wood carving, maintaining his yard and spending time with family. He continued his life as a “professional street walker” by walking up to get his daily newspaper. Many neighbors will miss seeing his smiling face and friendly wave hello. Edward is survived by his wife Nancy, daughters Mary Kay Fletcher, Penny (Eric) Bush and Pamela Laubengayer, sons Danny (Diane Bunch) Fletcher, Keith Fletcher, Jeffrey (Tina) Day and Randall Day, all of Battle Creek. Also surviving are daughter in law Karen Day also of Battle Creek, 26 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren, sister Betty (Carl) Baker of Terrell, TX and brother Richard (Sue) Fletcher of Kalamazoo, MI, as well as many nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Larry D. Fletcher, sons Bruce E. Fletcher and Donald J. Day Jr., and sister Wendlyn Langford.
