Hazel E. "Jean" Vaughn (McCowan)
Hazel “Jean” E. Vaughn, age 82, of Pennfield Township, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. Jean was born September 26, 1932 in Monterey, Tennessee to William and Rosetta (Phillips) McCowan. Jean married Willard J. Vaughn in 1950 and they moved to Battle Creek in 1951. Jean attended Maple United Methodist Church and was an expert quilter and gardener; she would grow many kinds of vegetables and flowers. Jean enjoyed her family, especially her loving grandchildren and great grandchildren; she prepared many wonderful meals and took great pleasure in caring for her family. In the last few months Jean began using social media and enjoyed connecting with more of her family and friends. Jean is survived by her husband of 64 years, Willard, daughters, Alphia Snyder of Battle Creek, and Connie Vaughn of Delton, grandchildren, Devyss (Joe) Hamilton, Mandi (Mark) Keady, Breanna (Justin) Weal, Lisa (Tom) Lamb, and Mikelah Snell, great grandchildren, Bradley and Emily Hamilton, Piper and London Keady, Sophia and Ella Weal and Justin, Meckenzie, Kelsey, and Katelyn Lamb, sisters, Lucille Phipps of Monterey TN. and Grace Smith of Battle Creek. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters. The family will receive friends at 12:00 PM Noon on Wednesday at the Maple United Methodist Church, 342 Capital Ave, NE. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Church. Memorials may be given to the Maple United Methodist Church, Community Meals Program.
