Ernestine Martha Yohpe
Ernestine “Ernie” Martha Yohpe, 87, died on September 28 2014 in Battle Creek after a short illness. She was born September 26, 1927, in Battle Creek to Edward Paul and Dorothy Sophie (Good) Yohpe. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Walter Edward and Carl Henry Yohpe and a sister, Myrtle Elaine (George) Brownell. She is survived by a sister Dorothy Beatrice (William) Perry, Litchfield, MI and nephews and a niece A. Scott Brownell, Matthew (Denise) Brownell, Daniel (Lisa) Brownell, of Battle Creek; Pamela (Pat) Tomaino, of Rome, NY, and Steven Tufte of Ypsilanti. Also surviving is a special cousin, Eleanor Shelley.
Ernestine was a graduate of Battle Creek Central in 1947 and worked in California, Chicago, and Battle Creek. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies Aid Society. She also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. She especially enjoyed working with a variety of crafts. Her crafts included needlepoint, decorated t-shirts and sweatshirts, a variety of Christmas decorations and beadwork. She brought joy to many during her time in The Oaks nursing home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 1 from 5-7 pm at Bachman Hebble Funeral Home 223 N. Bedford Rd. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 349 Capital Ave SW., Thursday, October 2 at 11:30 am. Burial will be at the National Cemetery following the service.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Hospice or a charity of one’s choice.
