Adela Ochoa (Baquera)
Adela Ochoa, 92, of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born July 26, 1926 in Somerville, TX the daughter of Andres and Rosalia (Ramirez) Baquera. Adela was one of the first Hispanic women to graduate from Somerville High School. She received a scholarship to Elliott Business College and continued her education there. Adela married the love of her life John Z. Ochoa on December 28, 1947. They were happily married for 48 years before his passing in 1995.
Adela was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church. She was very active in her church helping with the bingo hall, the St. Jerome League "St. Bridget" and was a member of the Spanish Rosary at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church. She also volunteered at the Charitable Union sewing clothing items. Adela loved to sew and crochet. She was constantly sewing blankets for her grandkids, even though she’d always insist, “the one she was working on would be her last.” Her strong belief in family and faith will always be remembered.
She is survived by her children, Rosie Aizpurua, Mary (Louis) Villagran, John (Rose) Ochoa, Linda (Dale) Shaver, and Tomas (Karen) Ochoa; 12 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; sister, Rosie Lopez; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; son-in-law, Louis Villagran; grandson, Jason Villagran; siblings, Julian Baquera, Angela Sendajas, and Mary Stella.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 13th from 5:00-8:00 PM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service with the rosary recited at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Jerome Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Jose Haro officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to Mass 9:30-10:30 AM. Burial will be at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Ross Township, MI. In Lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Southern Care Hospice.
