Condolence From: Todd Szalka, MHSBCA
Condolence: On behalf of the entire Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association, we offer our condolences to the Bess Family. If there was one thing you could count on at the MHSBCA Clinic or the East-West All-Star Game Banquet it was that Mike Bess would be in attendance. His love for the game was obvious and will be sorely missed. I'm sure Mike has already joined the coaching fraternity above.

Condolence: I am sure you are in a place now where you will win every argument (not that you didn't try before) and will be the chief arbiter on any issues revolving around baseball. Thanks for your friendship Mike. And last of all I am going to say something rarely heard from me; "GO BLUE"; waive the colors proudly my friend.

Condolence: My heart aches finding out that Mike has passed. Mike and Colleen were truly soul mates. I’ll always remember the time they met when Colleen told me she had to learn the game of football as Mike was a true Michigan fan which I knew then that he was the one! I’ll always treasure the friendship we had and his memory will live on in my heart. RIP friend.

Condolence From: Kenny Higgins
Condolence: I was stunned and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. Mike was a great friend and mentor as coach of the Village Inn summer baseball teams way back in the summers of 1981 and 1982. My teammates and I loved playing for Mike and those two summers created indelible memories - what could be better than playing baseball for 5 or 6 days a week with a terrific coach and a great group of guys? Mike had a true love for the game and that rubbed off on all of us. Mike always made a point of looking me up at Michigan tailgates in Ann Arbor and I will greatly miss the chance to catch up with him each fall. Please accept my condolences and best wishes.

Condolence: I’m so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. My thoughts and prayers to his entire family. While I haven’t seen Mike in many years, I have found memories of growing up with Mike in Post Addition and many baseball and football games played in his parent’s side yard and often in the street. Mike was passionate about baseball at an early age. We spent hours studying and trading baseball cards. He had a remarkable memory for player’s stats. Rest In Peace Michael, it was an honor knowing you.

Condolence: Condolences to the Bess family. I knew Mike from the baseball world, and even though I am a true Spartan and Mike is a true Wolverine, we always had baseball as a common ground. I remember always making a point to talk with him at the annual MHSBCA in Mount Pleasant. He will be missed.

Condolence From: Brad Petrowitz
Condolence: During Coach Bess' time with us at East Lansing, he taught me so much about baseball, umpiring, and most importantly, being a good man. In his own words he "had forgotten more about baseball than some people ever know". It was an honor to learn from someone like him for so many years, and he will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Colleen and his entire family.

Condolence From: Cindy Bjorkquist
Condolence: Deepest sympathy to the whole family. I met Mike for the first time on a baseball field and thought “who is that loud obnoxious new coach”? I had no idea the impact he would have on my son Drew over the years on the field, off the field and throughout the many years to come. Drew loved Mike as a coach but more than that as a mentor. I will be ever greatful for the impact he had on those boys. I’m sure Mike is sporting his Go Blue apparel in heaven.

Condolence From: Scrap & Cindy Cox
Condolence: There are no words to convey the feelings of loss our family is experiencing. You and Colleen were just cooking on your handy grill at our tailgates this fall. 40+ years, generations of the Bess and Cox families would come together on Snyder St. from all over the country to cheer on the “ BLUE”. Over the years, many friends and ex players of yours would stop to eat and chat. Those memories, and the major part you played in them, are with us forever. Scrap & Cindy Cox

He was a terrific husband to Colleen, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and one heck of a mentor to all the kids he came into contact with. He will certainly be missed . Our loss is heavens gain that is for sure. I am positive he already has a league started and has been giving batting lessons! Dan, Kyle and Tyler Gulick
