Obituary for
Gladys Berdine Bishop (Smith)
Gladys Berdine Bishop, 90, of Battle Creek passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Reflections Memory Care. Born January 1, 1928, in Port Washington, OH to Elvin and Maud (Sherer) Smith, she became a long-distance telephone operator during WWII after moving with her family to the Battle Creek area. It was here that she met and later married her beloved high school sweetheart and best friend, Howard Bishop, on December 21, 1946, in Newport, RI. The two returned to Battle Creek to raise their family, where Gladys found work at Kellogg's and became a proud member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club.
A longtime and active member of Redemption Lutheran Church, Gladys' love of lighthouses also led her to become a member of GILKA (Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association). Gladys could often be found doing needlework when she wasn't tending to her gorgeous flower beds, or writing creative reminiscent stories.
She is survived by her children, Daniel (Sara) Bishop, Susan Barber, Kathleen (George) Morris, Mark (Jana) Bishop, Patricia (Doyal) Little, and Mary Ann (Daniel) Fay; sisters, Doris Crumpton, Janet (Ray) Lockhart, and Joyce Putnam; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard; siblings, Dwain Smith, Robert Smith, and Thelma Dunham; and grandson, Michael Bishop.
