Shirley Jean Barclay, age 90, of Battle Creek, MI, died peacefully at home on Monday April 16, 2018. Shirley was born December 14, 1927 in Moline, IL to John E. and Lottie H. (Harrah) Kennedy.

Shirley was a 1945 graduate of Moline High School, and married the love of her life, James Lees Barclay, on June 14th, 1946 in Moline. Shirley and Jim lived in Ames, Iowa, Rock Island, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa, before they made their home in Battle Creek/Lakeview, MI in 1956. Shirley was a homemaker, wife and mother, and had been employed at Eagle Signal Corporation in Moline, and at JMT Photography Inc. and Krums Photographic Studios in Battle Creek. She was a devoted member of the congregation of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Lakeview where she also served as a Stephen’s Minister, and previously of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Battle Creek for forty years. An accomplished singer with a voice of unusual beauty, Shirley sang professionally and hosted her own radio program “Notes at Night” on WHBF of Rock Island in the 1940s. Shirley delighted in singing with the St. Paul and St. Mark church choirs, she was a member of the Battle Creek Community Chorus and the Morning Musical Club, and she was a Director of the Battle Creek Mother Singers. Equally talented as a China- painting artist, Shirley created exquisite floral and bird designs on China dishes, platters, ornate pitchers and tea sets that will continue to grace the homes of family and friends for generations to come. She also served the community as a PTA President at Minges Brook School and as a member of the local Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries.

Shirley is survived by her Children, Bernays (Claire) Barclay, of Albany, New York; James (Barbara) Barclay of Evergreen, Colorado; Laurel (Pat) McIsaac of Manton, Michigan; Shannon Stoudt of Hickory Corners, Michigan, and Marilyn (Billy) Smith of Nashville, Tennessee; her Grandchildren, Kenneth B. (Cindy) Barclay of Troy, NY; Joseph T. (Kelly Beck) Barclay of Brooklyn, NY; Anne E. Barclay of Brooklyn, NY; Caleb J. (Tristin) Barclay of The Woodlands, TX; Jacob D. (Jovanni Ramos) Barclay of New Orleans, LA; M. John L. (Nicole) Barclay of Eaton, CO; Melissa M. (Aaron) Comp of Manton, MI; Patrick V. McIsaac of Lake City, MI; Colin D. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband James in 2011. There will be a visitation with Shirley's family from 2:00 until 5:00 PM on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. Memorial services will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church at 10 AM Monday, June 11, 2018 with Pastor Brad Hubbard officiating.
