Hellen O. Shepherd, age 88, of Battle Creek, died May 2, 2017, at her home. Hellen was born May 7, 1928 in Detroit to Wasily and Mary Chiz. Hellen was a graduate of Holy Cross Catholic High School in Detroit and married William Shepherd in 1950 before coming to Battle Creek. Hellen was a homemaker and often cared for children in her home. Hellen was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Leila Arboretum Society. She enjoyed gardening, drawing, puzzles, going to garage sales, traveling and raising chickens. Hellen is survived by her son, David A. Shepherd of Climax, and Michael Shepherd of Battle Creek, two great grandsons and their mother Carmen Shepherd of Battle Creek. Hellen is also survived by her devoted care giver and friend, Tracy Chaib and her family, who together made “Miss Hellen’s” life a happy one. Hellen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William, a son, Thomas Shepherd and a grandson, Eric Shepherd. The family will receive friends from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Tuesday at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd. Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Christ United Methodist Church or the Leila Arboretum Society.
